THE HISTORY OF COLQUHOUN’S
The name Colquhoun has been synonymous with architectural hardware since Mr Colquhoun and a fellow ironmonger, Mr Whyte, formed their business partnership prior to the first world war. In those days the company was known as Whyte & Colquhoun Limited, and was a wholesaler of architectural and builders’ hardware to the joinery trade. Both men served in the army during the first world war and when they returned from active service in 1919, they continued in the ironmongery trade. Mr Colquhoun went on to establish his own business in 1928, ‘Arthur Colquhoun Limited’, and traded from premises at Blythswood Street in Glasgow city centre where he and his staff built a reputation for unrivalled product knowledge and customer service. The business was particularly good at sourcing obscure, “difficult to find” items and over the years Colquhoun’s became highly regarded amongst tradesmen throughout the country in need of expertise and assistance.
After Mr Colquhoun’s passing, the business was operated for a number of years by his son, Bert Colquhoun and when Bert died the business was sold to loyal and long-serving staff member, William Gregan. William was a talented ironmonger and intelligent man who made additional income from teaching Architectural Ironmongery classes at Stow Business College and Langside College in Glasgow. After William’s passing in 1954, the business remained in the Gregan family when Ronnie, youngest son of William, picked up the reigns. Ronnie had just been de-mobilised from his National Service when he was catapulted into the hot seat. Ronnie continued to apply the same values and traditions that his father and Mr Colquhoun did before him. A self-taught businessman and entrepreneur, Ronnie’s time in the business has spanned over 65 years and even today, in his 21st year of retirement, still enjoys a visit into Colquhoun’s once or twice a week. The business is now operated by Ronnie’s youngest son, Mike Gregan, who joined the company in 1990.
THE PRESENT DAY COLQUHOUN’S
In recent years Colquhoun’s has gone through a period of restructuring and we have transformed a traditional trade-counter style hardware business into a specialist online retailer. We have also created unique architectural hardware and timber door showrooms, displaying the most comprehensive range of quality products you will find in the UK. Our offices and distribution centres, based at Nelson Street in Glasgow, less than half a mile from the company’s original site, and at Great Portland Street in London, are utilised by architects, developers, interior designers and members of the general public – all searching for unique products and services that they are unable find elsewhere. We are proud to focus on the finest quality products manufactured here in Great Britain – manufacturers such as Frank Allart, Croft Architectural Hardware, Turnstyle Designs, Armac Martin, From The Anvil and Imperial Locks. We have also introduced products from some of Europe’s leading names such as Karcher Design of Germany & Mandelli of Italy.
In addition to architectural hardware, we have also developed a commercial door and door sets side to the business. We specialise in the manufacture and supply of high quality internal timber door sets for a wide range of varying projects such as private residences, hotels, bars and restaurants, schools, hospitals, offices and sports facilities. We pride ourselves at making solid timber doors for internal use, and believe the quality and craftsmanship of our doors speaks for itself. As with all the doors we make; virtually any style, size, design and finish is possible. Please take a look at our doors website www.colquhounsdoors.co.uk for more information and let us know if we can be of any assistance with your project. We would love to get involved.
The internet has opened up a world of opportunity for Colquhoun’s – as well as servicing the entire British Isles & Europe, we now service clients from Chicago to Sydney and many other places in-between. We are continually developing our online store with the aim of becoming the web’s number one place to shop for the best selection of the finest architectural hardware, much in the way Arthur Colquhoun did when he began in business all those years ago.
Since the company’s inception, one thing remains unchanged – our commitment to providing the highest standards of product, technical knowledge and customer service. This is what you can expect from almost 135 combined years of experience being passed down through the generations. When you buy from us you will see it is these values that position Colquhoun’s as the leading business in our field. Whether specifying for a client or choosing for yourself, we hope you find inspiration in our website and of course, if you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would love to hear from you.
